By nanotechnology, I’m referring to the microscopic robots of sci-fi origin.
I was just daydreaming about how one day in my lifetime, going to the store might mean buying an “assembly” nano-bot that will assemble an entire set of dishes from the molecular level.
You walk into the store, and perhaps you want to buy a beautiful kitchen table. All the raw material needed is in something the size of a cereal box, and the nanobot inside is just waiting to build it.
When activated the nano-bot, will begin its work by self-replicating a few million of itself, then start converting raw material into whatever it was designed to make. Before too long, your beautiful new Armour, plasma-screen television, or Volkswagen will appear being constructed in thin air.
Perhaps every home would have an assembly room or something the size of a microwave that could literally make anything in a couple hours. All you’d have to do is pay the appropriate website for the “blueprints,” then download.

Personal Nanofactory
It all depends on funding. If we put billions into it, we’d have stuff like that in a few years. Right now, it looks as if we’re going to be stuck with nanoscopic zinc-atom IBM logos for a while.

nano robot
I dont think we’ll ever be at a point where we have nano-robots building macro-sized devices such as TVs and cars and such. We already have nano-sized materials that attach to other materials to act as “smart” materials. It is true we’ve just touched the possibilities of nanotechnology, but I still believe nanotechnology will be limited to things such as sunscreen to block UV rays, windshield water blocking, and nanoparticles to make other materials stronger by mixing them into already strong materials such as concrete or steel. We have microelectromechanical systems, which are microstructures capable of sensing and actuating motion. The commercially seen products of MEMS are accelerometers, pressure sensors, and gyroscopes. The fields of MEMS and NEMS still have a long ways to go. It will be an exciting ride.

National Nanotechnology Initiative
I really do not know. But something very interesting I can tell you on this. Which has taken place at the thought level at least.
I watched a program (in National Geographic channel) related to “Alien’s visiting planet Earth”. This is a program with data collected from numerous scientific thinkers on this subject with intermediate pep talks given by the eminent scientists working in related fields from various international organizations and universities of high repute.
There they were showing us one possibility that aliens could visit us and destroy us by using their “Self-replicating nanobots”. Now does that sounds great for you? At least our scientists could imagine something wonderful like that, that one day sooner our scientists would be able to have some real self-replicating nanobots roaming our planet!
Quite interesting isn’t it?
